We begin our look at legendary machine-gun maker and firearms designer John Moses Browning with the construction and assembly of his highly unusual lever-action breech-loading rifle, the American Automatic Rifle. Taking the.30 caliber barrel and magazine from a Remington pump-action shotgun, Browning first designed the unique muzzle break to give the gun a sporting look and fire more accurate projectiles. He then produced a series of more powerful barrels before creating a specially designed chamber to accommodate the larger barrel and increase the cyclic rate of fire from one shot every four to seven seconds.

It took a day and a half to get his ideas down on paper. Browning’s financial backing from Remington only covered a small fraction of the $3,000 Browning needed to build a working prototype. He saved up his money and in the winter of 1899-1900, he hired a shop in his home town of Mentor, Ohio to build his first machine gun.

The original American Automatic Rifle had a 20-round magazine and had an overall length of 17 inches. The breech loaded the barrel. The barrel was held up by two levers and a clamping system that screwed onto the barrel. This system held the barrel in place during firing.

The receiver was set with the breech-loading mechanism, locking lug, dust cover, and detachable wooden stock. The barrel, bolt, and ejector rod were all steel. The gun fired between 4 and 8 times a second.

Browning improved the gun with a new magazine in 1905 and a new trigger in 1906.
